Shunan City was created on April 21, 2003 as a result of the merger of Tokuyama, Shinnanyo, Kumage, and Kano.

The city faces the Seto Inland Sea and extends to the Chugoku Mountain Range. The extensive area of the city is 656.0 km2, which is the widest in the prefecture.

The southern part of the city is a thriving commercial and industrial area. The urban center is a great commercial and business area where there are many stores and offices. A number of petrochemical and steel companies on the coast form one of the biggest petrochemical complexes in Japan. In the northern part of the city, where there is rich environment, agriculture and forestry have developed.

In addition to industrial growth, Shunan City plays an important role in government, culture, and sports in the prefecture. With respect to tourism, rich local resources and events in each season attract a lot of people to the city.

Shunan city is expected to show more development with the aim of being named a gCity of Vitalityh which would become a model for other cities to follow in Yamaguchi Prefecture.
