ABSTRACT

The Internet of Things (IoT) offers new possibilities to respond to the increasing demands of the construction industry. It is utilized simultaneously by architects, engineers, and construction professionals at all stages of the project life cycle; thus, the planning, design, construction and management procedures of a building can be realized in a healthy way. This study aims to identify IoT implementations across project life cycle stages through a comprehensive literature review and then prioritize project life cycle stages based on IoT usage using a questionnaire survey. To achieve the study objective, data were collected from civil engineers and architects involving in construction projects. Then, mean score was used to assess the importance of project life cycle stages. IoT has been widely adopted as a suitable tool to deal with challenges in construction projects and to obtain benefits in terms of automation, risk mitigation, data integration, and improved safety. According to overall results and civil engineers’ responses, the findings indicate that “executing” stage, followed by the “monitoring & controlling” stage were the most important stages for IoT implementations, respectively. The architect respondents ranked “executing” stage as well as “planning” stage as more significant than others. The study findings are expected to help increase industry practitioners’ awareness of IoT implementations.
