ABSTRACT

The construction of telecommunication masts and towers involves significant risks, including worker safety hazards, structural failures, and challenging site conditions. This study identifies key drivers that enhance safety practices in the sector, with particular emphasis on risk mitigation and compliance with occupational safety and health (OSH) regulations. A quantitative research approach was adopted, involving data collection from construction professionals and analysis using exploratory factor analysis with principal component extraction. Key drivers of safety include in-house safety activities, supervisor competence, safety training program, disaster assessment, safety protocols, human and environmental behavior, risk assessment and identification, risk mitigation, incentives, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and reward systems. The findings underscore the importance of integrating organizational safety culture, regulatory compliance, effective supervision, and technological support to improve safety outcomes. The study provides practical recommendations for industry stakeholders to strengthen safety compliance, enhance risk management, and reduce workplace hazards during telecommunication mast and tower construction in Nigeria.
