ABSTRACT

The study seeks to construct a barometer based on the community reality of the Salasaka indigenous people in Ecuador. This tool for analyzing social behavior can be used collectively and participatively and replicated in other non-indigenous communities, maintaining the objective of identifying and characterizing the sociocultural elements that contribute to peacebuilding. It draws on concepts of fundamental needs from authors such as Max Nieff, Amartya Sen, and Martha Nussbaum, as well as Johan Galtung's understanding of violence. The methodology used was mixed, employing various tools that allowed for the triangulation of results, highlighting cultural practices of community coexistence and the possible triggers of violent conflicts. The barometer is divided into three elements of human dignity, as proposed by the Colombian Constitutional Court, which determines: Living Well, which encompasses subsistence, understanding, and participation; Living as one wish, which includes leisure, spirituality, and identity; and living without humiliation, which focuses on freedom and protection. The results show that the population is satisfied in the Living Well category, but less so in Living as one wish. Spirituality highlights the practice of indigenous justice, valued for its effectiveness and focus on restoration rather than expulsion. In Living without Humiliation, the perception of security and discrimination emerges as weaknesses in the process of building a culture of peace.
