ABSTRACT

Natural disasters, such as floods, earthquakes and tornadoes, can drastically transform the lives of the residents of a community, affecting housing, food security, economic stability, cultural practices, among others. In many cases, inhabitants have demonstrated resilience and adaptability for generations. Particularly, flood responses and adaptation strategies are not well documented, particularly in social and housing terms. This article is an exploratory study about the resilience and adaptability of La Gasca community, which has suffered serious damage from floods in the last three years. It aims to investigate how floods have influenced the social dynamics of residents through interviews and surveys. Residents' resilience strategies focus on both physical and social dimensions, highlighting the interconnection between physical and sociocultural systems, which are often overlooked in adaptation discourse. Analyzing these strategies from the perspective of community values is essential for a sustainable recovery. Understanding the role of community values in housing adaptation is crucial to developing sustainable recovery plans, engineering designs and future research studies, ensuring strategies are informed by community experience. Future findings will contribute to the intellectual understanding of adaptation processes and theories, facilitating effective actions in response to floods.
