November 2014, Volume 1 Issue 1

Preface

The Second Australasia and South East Asia Conference in Structural Engineering and Construction (ASEA-SEC-2) is a part of the International Structural Engineering and Construction (ISEC) Society’s conference series. Hosted by Kasetsart University, the ASEA-SEC-2 Conference marks one of the University’s celebrations in 2015 on the occasion of her 72nd year of establishment.

The natural resources on Earth are being rapidly depleted and environment compromised due to the great rate of population growth. To meet the needs of the growing populace, more consumption activities are being pursued, such as excessive energy consumption, increased mining, and massive over-building in the built environment. These are unfortunately associated with global warming, exhaustion of forest resources, water scarcity, and inefficient waste processing. Correspondingly, sustainable solutions in structural engineering and construction are a greater challenge than ever before. The ASEA-SEC-2 collaborative international conference for researchers serves as a practical and efficient mechanism for discussing and seeking solutions to the problems created by excessive consumption activities.

The ASEA-SEC-2 conference was held 3-7 November 2014 in Bangkok, Thailand. The theme was “Sustainable Solutions in Structural Engineering and Construction”, which reflected on the latest advancements in the area in both academic research and industry practice. With today’s competitiveness due to globalization, ASEAN leaders are forming the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) for regional economic integration by 2015. Integrating industries and recognizing professional qualifications are part of the AEC areas of cooperation. We hope that this conference contributes to future cooperation amongst professionals in Structural Engineering and Construction in the region.

This book contains technical papers presented at the Conference. There are 16 sections of 128 articles by 254 authors and co-authors from 28 countries. All of the articles have been selected after a rigorous peer-review process of two stages -the abstract review and the full paper review. The 128 papers selected for presentation in parallel technical sessions provide opportunity for discussion points on the latest research methods and practices being conducted globally.

Topics covered in this book are in the multidisciplinary area of Civil Engineering, including legal affairs and contracting, construction technology and innovation, facilities and asset management, project management and risk analysis, safety and quality, planning and development, analysis and design of structural systems, materials, pavement, architecture, water infrastructure and management, education and sustainability, and many more.

We would like to thank the authors of the articles published in this book for their contribution. Thanks also to the members of the International Technical Committee and all of the reviewers, copyeditors, and proofreaders for their assistance in the review process. Last but not least, thanks to all the conference participants for sharing their ideas, knowledge, and fruitful discussions during the technical sessions.
