What to Expect

Mild, Sunny Days & Crisp Evenings

Daytimes are highly pleasant and perfect for walking around the city. However, as soon as the sun dips below the horizon (around 6:00 PM), the temperature drops rapidly. You will want to have a warm layer on hand if you are heading out for dinner or post-conference drinks.

The Easterly Breeze

Christchurch is a flat, coastal city. Even on a clear, sunny afternoon, a cool breeze can sweep in from the ocean. This wind can make a 17°C day feel a few degrees cooler, so wind-resistant clothing is highly recommended.

Sunlight & UV Levels

While the summer heat has faded, the New Zealand sun remains strong. The UV index is moderate in April, but if you plan on doing walking tours or sitting outside for lunch, we still recommend wearing sunscreen (SPF 30+) and sunglasses.

Packing Checklist

The secret to staying comfortable in Christchurch is layering. You may start the morning in a thick coat, drop down to a light shirt by midday, and need your jacket again by late afternoon.

  • For the Conference: Smart-casual layers. A blazer, light sweater, or cardigan is perfect for adjusting to the indoor temperature of the venue.
  • For the Outdoors:
    • A warm, windproof jacket or trench coat for the evenings.
    • A light, packable rain jacket (just in case of a passing shower).
    • Comfortable walking shoes to explore the beautiful Botanic Gardens.
    • A scarf or beanie if you plan on taking late-night strolls or early-morning runs.
