Politecnico di Torino was the first Italian Engineering School founded in the wave of the technical and scientific innovation that gave rise to the most prestigious European polytechnic schools in the mid-19th century. Founded as School for Engineers in 1859, it then became Regio Politecnico di Torino in 1906. Engineers, architects, designers and urban planners have been trained at Politecnico di Torino for over 160 years with rigor, integrity and high-level standards. This long ever-changing history has rated Politecnico among the top European technical Universities for education and research, with 38,700 students and a teaching staff of more than 1,000.

The Department of Structural, Building and Geotechnical Engineering (DISEG) is responsible for the promotion, coordination, and management of fundamental and applied research within the domains of construction science, geotechnics, technical architecture, building production, design, and representation. DISEG exhibits a strong interest in the advancement of digital infrastructures, with a specific focus on transport systems. New research avenues in this direction and the development of fresh multidisciplinary engineering courses in smart infrastructures are actively pursued.

Within the research realm, DISEG excels in both theoretical and experimental proficiency. Distinctive strengths encompass the design of construction projects, oversight of their execution, surveying, representation, and the investigation of existing structures for preservation and restoration. The department encourages and supports interdisciplinary collaborations, fostering interactions among researchers from diverse cultural backgrounds and utilizing analytical, numerical, and experimental tools and investigative techniques. Furthermore, DISEG actively participates in national, European, and international research programs, offering comprehensive educational programs at all three academic levels (bachelor's, master's, and Ph.D.).
